FRANKLIN While Jessica Calloway's family prepared for her funeral, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers Monday continued investigating the circumstances of her death.
Jessica, 14, a freshman at Franklin High School, died early Saturday, after being hit while crossing the southbound lanes of Interstate 75, near Ohio 73.
We're trying to talk to friends, said Patrol Dispatcher Jerri Redfern. Where she was going apparently backed up to I-75.
Jessica was at a party in Springboro Friday evening, but left, authorities said. She was hit at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, by a 1996 Toyota Avalon, driven by Granada McNeil, 25, of Fairfield. The driver was not injured nor charged in the accident.
Late Monday, officials at the Warren County coroner's office said they did not yet have a preliminary autopsy report.
We're still trying to interview people who may have left the party with her, Ms. Redfern said.
Franklin High School Principal Bob Leahy said state police were talking with students Monday at the 770-pupil high school in northern Warren County, where Jessica was a freshman; her sister Jacky is a senior, and brother Chris is a junior.
We made a statement to the kids when school began. Our crisis team has been available all day to talk to students and teachers, Mr. Leahy said. The kids have handled it well. They are consoling each other.
This was only Jessica's second year in the Franklin Schools, Mr. Leahy said. She transferred from Lebanon Schools as an eighth-grader.
She was very happy. She always laughed a lot and enjoyed playing soccer, said Jacky, 17, of her younger sister. She was very high-spirited. ... She had a lot of friends.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
