No vaccine, so flu shots off at present

By Terry Flynn
The Cincinnati Enquirer

EDGEWOOD — The Northern Kentucky Independent District Health Department said Tuesday it has not received its shipment of flu vaccine and is unable to make appointments for flu shots.

District officials are urging Northern Kentucky residents who are 65 and older to make appointments with their private physicians or continue to check the flu information line at (859) 578-7872, ext. 333, for updates.

Peggy Patterson, public health information officer for the department, said the health department had set Oct. 15 as the date to call for flu shot appointments.

She emphasized that it is most important to reach seniors first with the flu shots because they are most at risk for complications, such as pneumonia.

The health department will provide flu shots by appointment to adults, 65 years and older, at any of its four health centers as soon as the vaccine is delivered. The shots cost $10, cash or check, and no Medicare or insurance will be accepted.

Pneumonia shots also will be available for $10.

The Health Department also suggests these things to avoid contracting the flu:

        • Wash your hands frequently.

        • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

        • If possible, avoid crowds and crowded situations.

        • Keep your immune system strong: drink plenty of fluids, eat well, get rest and exercise.
