High school fans have many choices this week with sectional and district tournament play beginning in six sports.
The busiest week of the season includes the girls and boys Division I state golf tournaments in Columbus Friday and Saturday, along with the Division I and II state tennis tournaments.
GIRLS TENNIS: Both the Division I and Division II state tournaments are wide open. None of the defending state champion singles or doubles teams return.
Cincinnati has two singles players each in Division I and II and seven doubles teams, three in Division I and four in Division II.
The undefeated Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy sectional and district championship team of Jen Detkas and Shandon Dowiatt appears to be Cincinnati's best chance for a state championship.
Another CHCA player, Alex Gross, will contest for the Division II singles title. Ursuline's doubles team of Andye Kelley and Catherine Rentschler is expected to challenge in Division I.
STATE GOLF: The Lakota West girls team will attempt to duplicate the championship won by the boys team last year and send out retiring coach Bev Lyon a winner.
Mount Notre Dame and Middletown will join Lakota West at Ohio State University with 18 holes Friday and Saturday over the Gray Course.
Cincinnati's top-ranked Division I boys teams, Fairfield (1) and St. Xavier (2), will compete on the tough Scarlet Course, also on Friday and Saturday.
SOCCER: Sectional tournament action begins tonight with 10 girls games. The boys begin play Tuesday with five Division III first-round games.
Undefeated Lakota West, the 1999 Division I girls state champion, enters sectional play coming off a 3-2 victory over previously undefeated Dublin Coffman.
Coach Tara Kalkhoff's Firebirds finished the season undefeated (13-0-2) and No.1 in Cincinnati and No. 3 in the state poll.
St. Ursula (13-2-1) is another team to watch in Division I with a wide-open battle expected in Division II.
Defending Division II state champion Turpin is the favorite in the Division II sectional. Mariemont, Summit Country Day, Seven Hills and Madeira are top teams in Division III.
Colerain, Moeller and Lakota West are top Division I boys teams.
VOLLEYBALL: Sectional tournament action begins tonight and continue through Saturday with 16 sectional champions to be decided on Saturday at eight sites.
CROSS COUNTRY: The Voice of America Park will host the Division I girls and boys district meets at 10 a.m. Saturday. The top four teams advance to the Troy regional.
The Division II and III district meets will be contested at Princeton High School with the top four teams qualifying to the Troy Regional.
FIELD HOCKEY: District tournament play begins today.
