BENGALS
DAUGHERTY: Not much of a rivalry anymore
In heaven, The Great Man is wondering what the hell is going on. Rivalry? What rivalry?

Key to game: Get ahead
The Bengals, who fell behind in all four games, were able to rally twice for victories because of flawless third quarters against New England and Baltimore. Getting ahead early is the biggest key for the Bengals today.

Webb faced with stopping McKenzie

He had three sacks of Akili Smith, all at key times, and earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. That was the beginning of the end for former Bengals left tackle Rod Jones, now a Rams backup.

Warren's trip to N.Y. eye-opening
CLEVELAND — Gerard Warren's $35,000 fine for a hit on Jacksonville quarterback Mark Brunell seems less important to the Cleveland Browns rookie defensive tackle after visiting NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue in New York.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 1 Florida loses to Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. — Rex Grossman and No. 1 Florida are mortal, after all. Auburn is better than anybody thought. Damon Duval kicked a 44-yard field goal with 10 seconds left and the Tigers intercepted four of Rex Grossman's passes to shock No. 1 Florida 23-20 Saturday night.

Miami 30, Akron 27
OXFORD — A prayer, at best, is what Miami was left with after squandering an 18-point halftime lead to Akron. So the RedHawks relied on a “Hail Mary” play to pull out a 30-27 victory over the Zips Saturday at Yeager Stadium.

Wisconsin 20, Ohio State 17
COLUMBUS — For a day, all of the Wisconsin Badgers became history majors. Recreating the comeback of two years ago, Wisconsin spotted No.21 Ohio State a 17-0 lead, then roared back for a 20-17 upset Saturday.

LSU 29, Kentucky 25
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Jared Lorenzen, who lost the starting QB job three weeks ago, came off the bench to lead two second-half scores for Kentucky. But Rohan Davey connected with freshman Michael Clayton on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining to give LSU a 29-25 victory on Saturday night.

Thomas More 63, Franklin 13
RICHMOND, Ind. — Justin Frisk ran for five touchdowns and Curtis Williams rushed for 105 yards and a score to lead Thomas More.

Anderson 39, Mount St. Joseph 21
Alex Gill returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and Joel Steele passed for four touchdowns to lead Anderson to a 39-21 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.

BASKETBALL
Williams finds home with Nets
There are only four New Jersey Nets playing for the team this season who were on the team's active roster last year: former University of Cincinnati star Kenyon Martin, Keith Van Horn, Lucious Harris and Xavier graduate Aaron Williams.

Martin runs freely in Nets' victory
Former University of Cincinnati star Kenyon Martin was running the court Saturday without any aftereffects from his second broken leg in two years.

Dream becomes reality for UC walk-ons
From the time he was in eighth grade, Jamaal Lucas knew he wanted to play basketball at the University of Cincinnati. He grew up in Texas but saw enough of the Bearcats on television to appreciate their style of play.

Martin, Big'O' share spotlight
The two most decorated players in UC history were in attendance at Shoemaker Center for Midnight Madness: Oscar Robertson was honored near midcourt, and Kenyon Martin, who was in town to play an NBA exhibition game Saturday night.

Matta calls surprise midnight practice
Thad Matta said he had been envisioning his first practice as Xavier basketball coach since he got the job May 3. As the clock struck midnight Saturday morning, he couldn't wait any longer.

XU scraps blue, gray jerseys
The Xavier Musketeers will make their second uniform change in as many seasons, this one necessitated by their sponsor switch from Reebok to Nike.

UK's Parker reinjures knee, out for season
Kentucky sophomore Jason Parker, who underwent reconstructive surgery July 2 for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, reinjured the knee Friday and will miss the 2002 basketball season, University of Kentucky coach Tubby Smith announced Saturday.

HOCKEY
City's 'Ice War' melting
“Ice Wars II” — featuring the reincarnation of the Cincinnati Cyclones as a lower-level minor-league hockey team battling the new big boys on the block, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks — officially begins Saturday.

Cyclones CEO foresees NHL team here
David LeFevre, the Cincinnati Cyclones' chief executive officer, said he wants to bring an existing NHL team to Firstar Center someday — maybe as soon as four or five years.

Ducks appear set in goal
Injuries and roster moves forced the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks to use 12 different goalies last season. Sometimes, those goalies arrived so late from other cities, the other Ducks players didn't even know their names.

Philadelphia 4, Mighty Ducks 1
John Slaney scored two goals and added an assist, leading the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 4-1 win in the AHL over the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Saturday night at the Gardens.

BASEBALL
SULLIVAN: Mariners too good to be true
CLEVELAND — The Seattle Mariners have bulldozed baseball for six months, demolishing records, perplexing probability. They were, perhaps, too good to be true.

BOXING
Boxer thinking of war, Williams
Mohamad Abdullaev looks at the TV screen that shows a map of Uzbekistan, his homeland, with the arrows pointing to the southern border. He watches and hears the CNN anchorwoman and, though he can't understand her words, he knows.
