Mowry, Schmitts busy for Wyoming

By Tom Groeschen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        Wyoming has some of the hardest-working girls in show business in Abby Mowry and the Schmitt sisters, Alexis and Erika.

        If you make a phone call to their homes, odds are you won't get them. If they're not studying, they're out playing some sport — whatever is in season.

        The rundown:

        • Alexis Schmitt, a senior, is earning her 13th and 14th career varsity letters this fall. She is on Wyoming's cross country team that is rated No.1 in the city in Divisions II-III and is a member of the soccer team that is rated No.4. She is among the city's leading soccer scorers with 13 goals.

        • Erika Schmitt, a freshman, has the top Divisions II-III girls cross country time in the city (19:05) and also is a key player in soccer. She recently won the St. Xavier Invitational in cross country, then scored two goals later that day in a soccer victory over Seven Hills.

        • Abby Mowry, a sophomore, has a 9-1-2 record as the goalie in soccer and is one of the top five runners in cross country. She also is on the Wyoming golf team.

        Wyoming soccer coach Kellie Siler and cross country coach Mike Jacobs have worked together on scheduling their athletes.

        “They're all very, very dedicated,” Siler said. “As coaches, we've just been really flexible with the girls and letting them do everything they want to do.”

        It won't end soon, either. Alexis Schmitt and Mowry were both members of Wyoming's Division III state semifinal basketball team last year. Erika Schmitt, who played eighth-grade basketball last season, could move up that ladder as well.

        Come spring, the Schmitts and Mowry all will be on the track team.

        HOMAN RECORD: Summit Country Day senior Wes Homan recently shot a nine-hole score of 30 at Pleasant Hill Golf Course in Middletown, the lowest ever shot by a prep player at the course.

        Homan, the Enquirer's reigning Divisions II-III player of the year, won the Division III sectional last week. MILESTONE: Chuck Ausman, boys soccer coach at Oak Hills, recently won his 200th career game. Ausman, whose record is 200-133-56 as of this writing, is a veteran of 22 years at Oak Hills. His 1980 team was state runner-up.

        www.www. FOR SALE: Moeller High will open a new weight room Oct.22 and is selling its previous equipment. Items such as bench presses, dumbbells and leg machines are available at 50-60 percent of original cost. Interested schools should call Dave Angelo (792-3340, ext.301) or Dick Beerman (792-3340, ext.141). HALL OF FAME: Mount Healthy is beginning a Hall of Fame, with the first members to be inducted Friday at the home football game vs. Shroder Paideia.

        The inductees:

Glenn Schaaf, 1957 (football/basketball/baseball);

        Ron Rooks, 1960 (basketball);

        Bob Kline, 1966 (football/basketball/baseball/wrestling);

        Rick Pierson, 1973 (wrestling);

        Bill Doran Jr., 1976 (baseball, football, basketball);

        Billy Lewis, 1979 (basketball);

        Adair Carmichael, 1981 (basketball);

        Wayne Davis, 1981 (football/track);

        Suzanne Stragand, 1988 (soccer, basketball, track);

        Jeff Hill, 1990 (football/track). CLASSIFIEDS:

        Summit Country Day needs reserve girls basketball and seventh-eighth-grade head wrestling coaches. Call Terry McConnell, 871-4700, ext.252.

        Mariemont needs varsity and JV boys/girls lacrosse coaches (new programs) and a girls junior high basketball coach. Call AD Jeff Watterson, 272-7600.

        Harmony Community needs boys and girls varsity/JV basketball opponents. Call 533-4426.

        Moeller needs two boys volleyball assistants. Call co-AD Barry Borman, 792-3340.

        Walnut Hills needs a gymnastics coach. Call AD Matt Szyndler, 569-5540.
