Bonds Watch: No homers
The Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO Barry Bonds did not hit a home run Tuesday night and has 17 games left to hit eight and break Mark McGwire's record of 70.
Bonds, who leads the majors with 63 homers, was 0-for-3 with a walk in the Giants' 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros.
Houston won when Jeff Bagwell tripled home the tying run and scored on Moises Alou's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. The Giants led 2-1 going into the ninth, but Orlando Merced singled off Robb Nen (4-4) and scored on Bagwell's triple that caromed off the right-field wall.
Mike Williams (5-4) pitched the eighth for the victory, and Billy Wagner got three outs for his 35th save.
Andres Galarraga's home run estimated at 485 feet off Astros rookie Roy Oswalt in the second inning brought the sellout crowd of 40,901 to its feet. Galarraga's homer surpassed Bonds' 451-footer against San Diego on June 7 as the longest in the two-year history of Pacific Bell Park.
