Deerfield Township celebrates cultures

By Earnest Winston
The Cincinnati Enquirer

DEERFIELD TWP. — The township's largest festival is getting bigger — and more diverse.

New this year will be the African Drummers, the Family Martial Arts Demo Team and Kristi's Tumbling and Trampoline. The McGing Irish Dancers will also perform Sunday.

WEEKEND EVENTS
While many weekend entertainment events were canceled, there are still some opportunities for stress-relieving recreation:
    • Learn the games and crafts enjoyed by early American Indian kids at Fort Ancient's Children's Day, 1-4 p.m. today. Admission: $5 adults, $1.25 children.
Fort Ancient is east of Lebanon on Ohio 350. Information: 932-4421.
    • They travel thousands of miles to reach remote Mexican glades. This weekend at Caesar Creek Lake, you can help the Army Corps of Engineers tag the fabled monarch butterflies to aid further study.
Arrive by 11 a.m. at the Caesar Creek Lake visitor center for orientation. Wear pants and hiking shoes; bring a butterfly net if you have one. The session concludes at 2 p.m. The center is off Ohio 73 east of Waynesville. Information: (513) 897-1050.
    • If you'd rather run with dogs than chase butterflies, join today's annual Critter Caper 5K Run/Walk for the Animals at Joyce Park in Fairfield. Canine optional. Registration is 8-9:45 a.m. and feet start moving at 10. The $30 fee benefits Butler County Humane Association. Information: 867-5727.
    • Whether it's Kate sassing Petruchio or Titania wooing a donkey, the Bard wrote some memorable love scenes. An ensemble from Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival presents romance from several comedies at “In Love with Shakespeare.”
The 45-minute program begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton's Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park, 1763 Hamilton-Cleves Road (Ohio 128). Bring lawn chairs. Admission is $7 and $5. Information: 868-8336.
“I think (the diversity of entertainment is) the township's way of reaching out to everybody in our community,” township spokeswoman Fran Klatte said.

The fourth annual festival will be noon to dusk at Warren County Landen-Deerfield Park. Jack Nixon and the Cincinnati River Band will be the headliner at the free festival, which drew 4,000 last year.

Also new will be the Teen Tent, which will feature competitive games, karaoke and music by Brian Douglas of Q102. Temporary tattoos will also be provided.

“We decided that the teens needed someplace to call their own and hang out,” said Laurie Hyden, administrative assistant for the Mason Landen Kings Chamber of Commerce, who organized the event under the 30-by-30-foot tent.

“They're going to hunt for gummy bears in bowls of whipped cream, so it is going to be messy. And we're going to do egg relay races with eggs on the spoon,” Ms. Hyden said.

Businesses in Deerfield Township donated prizes for the teen games, including CDs, food coupons and free haircuts. Parking will be available at Landen Square with shuttle service to the park.

With this week's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., Mrs. Klatte said, “We all do really need to pull together and celebrate our differences. That is what makes this country great. We need to all come together and just join forces now more than ever.”
