Iowa 44, Miami 19

Poor 1st half, Iowa QB too much for RedHawks

By Megan Manfull
Des Moines Register

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Miami coach Terry Hoeppner knew of Kyle McCann entering his team's game with Iowa. He just didn't know how good the Hawkeyes quarterback is. But he found out Saturday when McCann threw a career-high four touchdown passes as Iowa defeated Miami 44-19.

“I thought Kyle McCann was outstanding,” Hoeppner said. “If he was standing right here, I'd say, "Kyle, you did better than I thought you'd do.' That was an awesome performance by him today.”

McCann threw touchdown passes of 18 and 32 yards to Dallas Clark, 15 yards to Jeremy Allen and 52 yards to Kahlil Hill. The senior, who previously had never thrown more than two touchdown passes in a game, finished 13-of-16 for 201 yards with one interception.

“This is the most fun I've had here,” said the 6-foot 5-inch, 240-pound quarterback, who has won four of his last five starts. “I'm having a lot of fun.”

RedHawks quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had a much tougher time getting his offense going. Miami had only 26 rushing yards, one first down and zero passing yards at halftime.

Roethlisberger, who often was under pressure, was sacked five times and finished 9-of-18 for 173 yards and two interceptions.

The RedHawks' only touchdowns came against the Hawkeyes' reserve defenders in the second half.

Roethlisberger ran 80 yards for a TD in the third quarter, and threw touchdown passes of 56 yards, to Michael Larkin in the third quarter, and 40 yards, to Jason Branch in the fourth.

“They are a better team than they looked in the first half,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said of the RedHawks.
