Taking care of your whole self

Calendar

Coming to town: Shaman Don Miguel Ruiz, author of the best-seller The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (Amber-Allen Publishing; $12.95) will speak Oct. 28 at the New Thought Unity Center in East Walnut Hills.

Mr. Ruiz will speak at both church services and will present a workshop at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. Ruiz's teachings reflect the philosophies of the Toltecs, who believed that all energy is derived from one source and influenced by the same universal laws.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. 961-2527.

Research

Job health: Air pollutants in the environment and on the job can alter heart rates in young, seemingly healthy hearts, a new study says.

And those alterations may play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease, says the study in the Aug. 28 issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Previous studies have linked exposure to air pollutants to cardiac death in the elderly. The new study is the first to examine air pollution particles in a younger population, and the first to look at air pollution in the work environment.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Harvard University School of Public Health, followed 40 men, average age 38, who work as boilermakers in Boston. The workers are exposed to air particles similar to those in the general population, but at much higher concentrations.

Researchers recorded workers' heart rates and air quality as they worked. Data showed that the higher the concentration of pollutants, the less responsive workers' heart rates were. That lack of responsiveness is one of the symptoms associated with coronary artery disease and heart rhythm disorders, according to researchers.
