Mom instills Bacon tradition with pair of sons
Caryl Schawe used to take her infant son to Roger Bacon volleyball practices. Today, the son starts for Bacon's football team while Mom continues her stellar coaching career.
Caryl, who was inducted into the Roger Bacon Women's Hall of Fame earlier this year, returns every player from her Division II state runner-up volleyball team. This year's team is No. 1 in The Enquirer's Division II-IV area poll.
Caryl's son, Brandon, a senior, is the starting center on a Bacon football team ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer's Division II-VI poll.
When Brandon was three months old, we had a baby bed set up for him in a room just off the gym, Caryl said. I would coach and he would take his naps in there.
Today, Brandon rides to school daily with his Mom and brother Brian, a Roger Bacon sophomore. Brian plays for a Bacon soccer team ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer's Division II-III poll.
Brandon got the first taste of Mom's volleyball coaching schedule. Caryl started coaching at Our Lady of Angels in 1979 and moved to Bacon in 1984 when the school became co-ed.
This has been Brandon's way of life, Caryl said. He always wanted to be a Spartan. It's become a part of all my children's lives.
Another future Spartan is Caryl's daughter Katelyn, 11. The kids and Caryl's husband, Bill, attend Mom's volleyball games when schedules permit. And the boys attend each other's games when they can.
Caryl's resume includes three state runner-up finishes (1982, 1999, 2000), six league titles in the GGCL, and six Coach of the Year awards.
She's a great coach, said Dan Starkey, Bacon's head football coach. She's in our Hall of Fame already, which is very unusual for an active coach. That tells you something about how good she is.
