School eyed by preservationists closed
The Associated Press
EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio Preservationists are fighting to save a 71-year-old brick colonial school, but now the school has been temporarily closed because of safety and health risks.
Superintendent Elvin Jones told parents of Kirk Middle School students that classes would be delayed until Sept. 10.
The problems include black mold, exposed asbestos and a deteriorating roof, clock tower and exterior columns. The engineering firm URS put the cost of the repairs at more than $500,000.
Mr. Jones said the closing could mark the end of the school.
