Cuyahoga property values restored

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND — Millions of dollars in residential property value that disappeared from Cuyahoga County's tax rolls during last year's reappraisal have been restored by Auditor Frank Russo, who blamed the mistakes on minor errors.

The corrections come more than two months after the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that $115 million in property value was lost during the reappraisal, due primarily to oversights, errors and questionable judgments made by Mr. Russo's staff.

Under Ohio law, the auditor may change a taxpayer's bill if the auditor determines the tax was calculated incorrectly due to a clerical error. Amended bills were sent to property owners in June and July, and all have been paid, the newspaper reported.

But changes have yet to be made to cases where appraisers determined values at hundreds of thousands of dollars less than properties' selling prices. The properties are set to be re-examined.
