Wade, Schuur sing for 450
By Maxine Berkman
The soul sounds of Grammy-winner Diane Schuur and jazz artist Kathy Wade soared above the heat and drew 450 aficionados with them at the Crown Jewel of Jazz cabaret Saturday ) at Music Hall Ballroom.
The black-tie concert gala was the finale of the seventh annual Hood is Bigger Than You Think summer concert series.
Guests nibbled specialties created by chef Paul Sturkey and compared favorite past performances. Some considered what music they turn to when they have the blues. A sampling:
Moss White, Evanston: I love melodic blues, anything by Dinah Washington and Buddy Johnson's "I Only Have Eyes for You.' I used to hear it at the old Greystone Ballroom.
Janet Ach, East Walnut Hills: "Don't Worry, Be Happy' makes me happy.
Ron Felder, downtown: I have a glass of wine, play something by Diane Schuur, and tension just goes away.
The concert generated $18,000 for Learning Through Art Inc. (LTA), an agency that takes the arts and artists into classrooms and community centers.
