The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's first new music director in 15 years will be introduced to the Tristate in the first live telecast from Music Hall in two decades.
WCET (Channel 48) will broadcast Paavo Jarvi's opening weekend concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15. It will be the first-ever national broadcast of a music director's inaugural concert with an orchestra, when the show is aired on PBS next spring or summer.
Mr. Jarvi, 38, is among the first of a crop of young conductors to take over major American orchestras.
He's the first of what we think will be a new breed of music directors, said Jack Dominic, WCET vice president. We suggested to PBS that they do a series of these (new maestros). ... You've got a young, dynamic American taking over a major United States orchestra.
The program will premiere a new work, Streetscape, by 33-year-old American composer Charles Coleman, commissioned by Mr. Jarvi.
Mr. Jarvi an Estonian-born American, was named in January 2000 to be the 12th music director of the 106-year-old orchestra. His appointment to the CSO has generated international media attention.
The live WCET broadcast and the PBS telecast will be produced by WCET, the CSO and Brandenburg Productions Inc.
The cost, estimated at $300,000 to $450,000, will be funded by the Louis and Louise Dieterle Nippert Trust.
