Compiled by Sara Pearce
Open Season by Linda Howard (Pocket Books; $24.95). Daisy Minor is single, living with her widowed mother and bored, bored, bored. So the 34-year-old librarian gets a makeover and, voila!, she's transformed into a man magnet. But on her way home late one night, she sees something she should not have and is suddenly the target of a killer. Signing: 7 p.m. today, Books & Co., 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering (937) 298-6540.
Gravesend Light by David Payne (Plume; $13). It's the early 1980s, and anthropologist Joe Madden has returned to his family's North Carolina beach house home to study an isolated Outer Banks hamlet. He falls in love with a doctor, but their differing ethics and values soon have them, and others in town, at odds. Here's a great read: a story rich in color and sentiment, both rip-roaring and romantic, said the Booklist review. Signing: 7 p.m. today, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Edwards and Madison roads, Norwood, 396-8960.
Paradise Lost by J.A. Jance (HarperCollins/Morrow; $25). Arizona sheriff Joanna Brady returns in the ninth book in Ms. Kellerman's suspense series. She has a new husband. Is building a house. And seems to be battling constantly with her preteen daughter, Jenny. Things go from bad to worse between mother and daughter when Jenny stumbles across a murder victim while sneaking a smoke during a Girl Scout camping trip. Signing: 7 p.m. Wednesday , Books & Co., 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering (937) 298-6540.
Lost Hunters by Deanne Devine (Lighthouse Press; $18.50). A curse on a small Indiana town dooms it to a cluster of strange deaths every 20 years, or so the local legend goes. Some folks, believe it while others dismiss it. But how to explain the weird things that begin occuring one June evening? You'll have to read the Cincinnatian's debut novel to find out. Signing: 4 p.m. Saturday, Media Play, Forest Fair Mall, 671-9300.
