UC programs aim to smooth way to college

        The University of Cincinnati has announced awards to support 10 partnerships with Cincinnati Public Schools to help more students earn college diplomas.

        The partnerships will help create a seamless education from preschool through college graduation, said Anthony Perzigian, provost and senior vice president for undergraduate and graduate education.

        Funding will come from the UC Institute for Community Partnerships, the Ohio Board of Regents and Procter & Gamble, with matching funds from individual partners.

        The projects are:

        • $12,000 for development of a comprehensive health and wellness program for students of the East End Community Cultural Heritage School in cooperation with the College of Education and College of Nursing.

        • $11,000 to integrate distance-learning technology in environmental science at Walnut Hills, Hughes Center and Clark Montessori.

        • $10,000 for expansion of mental health services at Rockdale Academy, in collaboration with the UC School of Social Work.

        • $10,000 to expand information literacy for social studies and science concepts beyond the current Hughes and Clark Montessori schools, with University Libraries.

        • $10,000 to provide college level studies at Western Hills High School, starting with English courses.

        • $9,000 to develop a Summer Academy of Information Technology at Taft High School, with the College of Applied Science and University College.

        • $8,000 for professional development for middle school math teachers, with the College of Education and McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

        • $5,500 for developing a Master of Arts degree, through the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, for language arts teachers in Cincinnati Public Schools.

        • $2,152 for workshops to enhance transitions from Cincinnati Public Schools to UC.

        • $1,750 for CPS and the UC chemistry department to promote science literacy.
