Dusing's relay places 3rd at worlds

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Covington Catholic grad Nate Dusing and his U.S. 800-meter freestyle relay teammates swam to the bronze medal Friday in the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Australia won in a world-record time of 7:04.66, smashing the old mark of 7:07.05 that it set at the 2000 Olympics. Italy took the silver in 7:10.86, with the United States going 7:13.69 to beat Great Britain by two seconds for the bronze. Dusing's teammates were Scott Goldblatt, Chad Carvin and Klete Keller.

“The race went pretty much how we thought it would,” Dusing said. “Australia showed how great they really are. We knew it would be a tight race for silver between us, the Italians and the British. We would've liked the silver, but we're proud of how we swam.”

Said Carvin: “It was awesome to be part of this race. Any time you can see someone go 7:04, and there was also a 7:10, that's something special. I think we (the U.S. relay swimmers) each would have had a better race if we could have been more head to head with the leaders, but it's hard to race when someone is so out in front.”

Dusing swam the fastest split (1:48.29) in the preliminary heat, in which the United States had the fastest time (7:15.20).
