Where to play sand volleyball




        Public courts

        • Sawyer Point Courts open to individual play until 6 p.m. daily and evenings on Friday, Saturdayand Sunday (lights until 11 p.m.). Bring your own ball. You can usually play without reserving, but to reserve a court, call CRC Water Front Special Events, Jack Collins at (513) 352-6185. Parking $2, $5 on event nights. Nets are up from late May until October.

        • For CRC leagues (Co-Ed, Women's and Men's Teams). About 130 teams apply in April. Fees range from $85 to $190 per team/season. Season runs from late May to August. CRC provides the balls. All regular games, except 6-person teams, are self-referred. Single-elimination tournaments are on Mondays in August. For information, team application or a tournamnet schedule, call Vanessa Henderson at (513) 352-1621 or visit the CRC office at Suite 800, Two Centennial Plaza, 805 Central Ave., downtown Cincinnati.

        League courts

        A somewhat more serious league atmosphere, people play for cash and other prizes. Cincinnati tournaments draw players from Indianapolis, Louisville, Dayton, Chicago and Cleveland. The locations of league play:

        • Setters Volleyball, Cherry Grove Lanes, 4005 Hopper Hill Road, Cherry Grove.

        League play Monday-Friday. Tournaments 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Open play 10 a.m-6 p.m. Sunday.

        Fee for open play is $2 (can play all day); League fees are $90-$222 per team/season for 8-week session. For more information, call Kevin Westerkamm at (513) 528-1594 or (859) 802-0198.

        • Cincinnati Sand Volleyball Club, 837 U.S. 50, Milford. Open early April to end of October. -

        Open play 4-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 4 p.m.-midnight Friday (except tournament days). Tournaments, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday. (Free to watch). Fees for league play, $80-$160 per team/season.

        Park admission, $2 for open play. Youth programs available for 4th-8th graders.

        • Sports Express, 5280 Ohio 741, Mason. Has four sand courts. Open and tournament play available most days. Hours vary. Call first, (513) 398-2400.

        • Bar & Grill Leagues: You will need to call each establishment to find out when they play and how to join. Although there is no organized list of locations, here are a few:

        Back Porch Saloon, 9626 Princeton-Glendale Road, West Chester. League play only 6:30 to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Call (513) 874-2432.

        Hooligan's Pub & Eatery, 3340 Highland Ave., Pleasant Ridge. Open play daily and Saturday evenings. League play every night but Saturday. Call (513) 841-9994.

        Murray's Pub, 2169 Queen City Ave., Fairmont. League play Tuesdays and Thursdays. Open play other days. Closed Sundays. Call (513) 661-6215.

        Township Fields and Tavern, 4575 Mount Carmel Road, Anderson Township. Open play most days. Call (513) 831-0160.

        Winter play

        Southern Lanes, 7634 Alexandria Pike, Alexandria, claims to have the only indoor sand courts in our area. Open to public for individual and quad league play. Court rental, $24 per hour or $12 per hour for leagues. $160 per team per season for tournament play. Call Dan Perkins at (859) 635-2121.

        Build a court

        Court guidelines are available for free download at www.volleyball.org.

        Sand volleyball courts are regulation volleyball court size. Basic materials needed are: 110 tons of gravel, 205 tons of washed sand, 500 ft of perforated drainage pipe with connectors.
