Armstrong presents award
The Associated Press
DAYTON, Ohio Thirty-two years ago, Ohio native Neil Armstrong took man's first steps on the moon.
The anniversary coincides with a National Aviation Hall of Fame ceremony to honor a group that includes Mr. Armstrong and other test pilots and space pioneers.
Although he rarely makes public appearances, Mr. Armstrong agreed to present the Milton Caniff Spirit of Flight Award on Friday to the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.
The award recognizes a significant contribution to America's air and space heritage.
Mr. Armstrong, 70, has been reclusive for decades, rarely giving interviews or speaking in public.
Mr. Armstrong also is a member of the test-pilots group and the aviation hall of fame. He flew an experimental X-15 rocket plane and a Gemini space capsule before his moon flight.
The Spirit of Flight award is named for the late Milton Caniff, a Dayton cartoonist who did sketches of those enshrined in the hall of fame. Past recipients include the Flying Tigers and Tuskegee Airmen fighter-pilot groups of World War II and the Mercury astronauts.
The aviation hall of fame was founded in Dayton in 1962 and later established by Congress. Its 170 inductees also include the Wright brothers and Charles Lindbergh.
