Jockey gets thrown onto another horse
By Malcolm C. Knox
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Two jockeys were injured Thursday at River Downs when one horse tripped, catapulting its rider onto another horse and into its jockey.
Beth Butler, 38, was released from Mercy Hospital Anderson at around 4:30p.m. with a broken collarbone and rib. She was thrown from Rose Adare, who might have clipped heels with another horse entering the first turn of Thursday's second race.
Butler landed on jockey Eddie Zuniga, 31, who suffered a broken hip and a re-broken clavicle. He was still under observation Thursday night, said his wife, Renee.
It's a rarity that that happens, Darlene DeCaro, assistant director of publicity at River Downs, said of the accident. I don't know the last time we've had an accident.
The condition of the two horses, Rose Adare and Morgan's Crystal, was undetermined, said John Engelhardt, River Downs publicity director.
The jockeys' injuries should not be career-ending, DeCaro said.
Zuniga, who lives in Florence, Ky., has won more than $8 million, with 733 wins, since Jan.1, 1991, according to Equibase, the official database for the thoroughbred industry. Zuniga is a former leading rider in Chicago.
Butler, who also lives in Florence, has been riding since August 2000 and has 38 wins, 40 second-place and 65 third-place finishes, for $300,217.
