The Cincinnati Enquirer
A man found severely beaten and unconscious in an Over-the-Rhine parking lot Sunday morning was in critical condition at University Hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said Sunday night.
In a separate incident in Over-the-Rhine, five men were shot in five seconds Saturday night on West 15th Street, leaving at least one in critical condition.
Dave Gallant II, 21, of Sedmansville was found in the parking lot of the old Grammer's restaurant at 101 E. Liberty St.
A citizen flagged down a Cincinnati police officer at 8 a.m., but it was not known how long Mr. Gallant had been there. The assault began on a side walk, police said.
His injuries required surgery, police said.
Authorities are searching for a man in his 30s known as Steve who frequently rides a bicycle in the area to question him. He was last seen on East Liberty Street on a bike at 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
Sunday afternoon, Over-the-Rhine residents vented their fears about the most recent shootings. Cincinnati homicide investigators continued to search for the gunman, who was last seen in a blue or gray Chevrolet that disappeared north on Pleasant Street.
I'm really fed up anymore, I stay at home because I'm scared, really scared, said Charles Turley, 48, a lifelong Over-the-Rhine resident. People can't go to the store.
The shooting victims: Derrick Bald win, 23, of New Burlington, in critical condition Sunday night at University Hospital; Donte Reese, 26, of Westwood, in fair condition at University; and Michael Johnson, 22, in seriouscondition at Deaconess Hospital. Alfonzo Woods, 30, of Mount Auburn, and Rico Terrell, 27, were treated and released.
Police say the men were standing in front of Walt's Grocery at 118 W. 15th St. when the shooting occurred. One victim came stumbling into the convenience store, bleeding. A cousin of Mr. Baldwin said she called 911 from the store.
I was in here working, lot of customers, store clerk Neasar Hussein said Sunday. So I hear shots, 2, 3, 4. I didn't see anything.
