Madison Regatta to Madison

City's boat Oh Boy! Oberto wins race

The Associated Press

MADISON, Ind. — Thirty years after Jim McCormick drove Miss Madison to a win at the 1971 Indiana Governor's Cup, Steve David gave this Ohio River city a similar thrill on Sunday.

For the first time since McCormick's upset victory, David drove the hometown boat to a championship on its home course at the Madison Regatta.

“This is the stuff of teamwork and faith and the people here together,” said David, who returned to the cockpit of an unlimited hydroplane for the first time since 1999.

“The star of this production is the city of Madison,” he said.

Oh Boy! Oberto is the boat's sponsor, but it is owned by the city of Madison.

David covered the 2 1/2-mile course with an average speed of 130.074 mph. The three closest competitors were each penalized a lap for starting too soon, clearing the way for David's victory.

His radio stopped working during the race, so David didn't realize he had won until he returned to the pits and saw people celebrating.

“Usually everybody walks away from me,” said David, who didn't see the checkered flag. “I was just racing as hard as I could. I was watching the water.”

Mike Hanson drove Miss Madison to its last victory in 1993 in San Diego. Since the city of Madison began owning a team in 1961, it has produced just six victories.
