Cincinnati Public Schools Superintendent Steven Adamowski withdrew Tuesday from consideration for the top schools job in Nashville, Tenn., citing hometown support and a desire to continue overseeing reforms.

        Dr. Adamowski was one of four finalists to interview in Nashville last weekend for director of schools.

        News of Dr. Adamowski's decision came less than two hours before a committee of Nashville's board of education was to meet for contract talks. The offer was to include a salary of $180,000, nearly $44,000 more than Dr. Adamowski makes as CPS superintendent.

        “I'm at the point in my career where I don't have to do things for the money,” said Dr. Adamowski.

        He said he was impressed by Nashville's warm reception and commitment to reform its schools, but he was moved by about 100 letters, phone calls and faxes expressing support from parents, community members and business leaders here.

        “I think that's terrific,” said CPS board member Harriet Russell upon hearing the news. “This gives us an opportunity for stability and for the reforms implemented to continue.”

        George H. Thompson III, Nashville school board chairman, said he was surprised and disappointed to hear the news Tuesday afternoon.

        “He was very highly regarded,” Mr. Thompson said. “I think he made a judgment that he likes where he is best.”

        Dr. Adamowski said he wants to continue to oversee ongoing reforms, including a plan to restructure the district's five neighborhood high schools within two years, and implementation of a teacher evaluation system, which is expected to include a pay-for-performance component.
