Miss Basketball battling knee trouble

Katie Schwegmann, the former Bishop Brossart guard and reigning Kentucky Miss Basketball, enters tonight's Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game (6:05p.m., Owensboro Sportscenter) thinking about the usual things: Kentucky's size and strength; learning new defenses; playing in front of a large crowd from around the state.
But Schwegmann also is preoccupied by her left knee.
She sprained the lateral collateral ligament during a Tuesday scrimmage, and the injury has her concerned about not jeopardizing her future at Miami University.
I'm going to be tentative so I don't ruin my future, Schwegmann said. I think (the knee) will be fine.
To that end, Schwegmann's playing time may be limited tonight against Indiana. The knee she injured is the same one that required surgery last year to repair the anterior cruciate ligament and needed arthroscopic surgery in April to clean out loose bodies.
Schwegmann has seen a doc tor, but she's not sure how much she'll play today or in the rematch June 23 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
I have to take it easy, Schwegmann said.
Miami coach Maria Fantanarosa said she isn't worried.
It's still the offseason, she said. Katie's a hard worker. We don't have to worry about her until October.
Northern Kentucky has one representative on the boys team. Newport Central Catholic's Ronny Dawn, a Marshall signee, is part of the team that takes on Indiana at 9p.m. today.
