Tennis tournament a family affair
By Malcolm C. Knox
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The age-old question of whose dad can beat whose dad will begin to be settled today. And for the first time, moms are getting in the act, too.
Play begins today in the Cincinnati Recreation Commission's father-son and mother-daughter tennis tournaments, which will continue through Sunday at Lunken Playfield.
This is the first year for the women's version of the tournament; the men will be playing for the 22nd time.
We'd never had a request for it, tournament director Karen Montavon said.
The players range in age from children who have recently finished the 12-year-old circuit to college players, and on up for the parents.
The winners of the C. James Meakin Father & Son Tennis Tournament will qualify for the national father-son tournament played in Cincinnati annually. This year's tournament will be July 27-29.
There are national mother-daughter competitions, but the Cincinnati tournament is not a qualifier.
Montavon said in the future, the tournament might extend to father-daughter and mother-son play.
