Teen-ager charged in bank heist

By Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — A bank robber pulled off a heist with the help of least two accomplices, police said Wednesday.

Richard Wayne DePew, 19, who listed an address in the 900 block of Gordon Smith Boulevard, was arrested early Wednesday on charges of aggravated robbery and grand theft in connection with the May 9 holdup of the First National Bank of Southwestern Ohio in the 2200 block of Peck Boulevard.

Two men who are accused of helping Mr. DePew were arrested Wednesday afternoon. Stanson Hemphill III, 20, of Petty Drive, and Douglas Edward Brown, 31, of the 500 block of Front Street, were being held on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

All three men will be facing federal charges later, said Officer Don Taylor, Hamilton police spokesman. Hamilton Sgt. Thomas E. Kilgour said more arrests could follow.

The charges come amid the latest spate of Greater Cincinnati bank heists, and follow the arrests of two teen suspects in connection with a pair of holdups at a Forest Park savings and loan.

As of May 24, there had been 28 bank robberies in Hamilton County, pushing the tally ahead of the pace last year, when bank robberies hit a 15-year high.

Mr. DePew's bail was set at $15,000 cash, and he remained in the Butler County Jail awaiting a June 6 preliminary hearing.

Mr. Brown, a laborer, and Mr. Hemphill, a musician/producer, are scheduled for bond hearings in court today.

According to the affidavit of Hamilton Police Detective James Cifuentes, filed in the municipal court, Mr. Brown “assisted in the planning of the robbery and also received cash proceeds from the robbery.” In another affidavit, Detective Cifuentes accuses Mr. Hemphill of driving the getaway vehicle.

Witnesses told police that a gunman wearing a black ski mask had brandished a large handgun then fled on foot, a police report says.

The same bank was robbed in April 2000.
