Campbell Co. takes title in 38th District

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

Two Bishop Brossart throwing errors and junior catcher Kip Mason's home run were enough to give Campbell County a 4-0 win Thursday in the 38th District final at Tom Mohr Field.

Both the Camels and Mustangs advance to next week's 10th Region tournament at Harrison County High in Cynthiana. Campbell County won two of its three games against fellow Alexandria school Brossart this season.

“We treat it like a war,” said Camels junior pitcher Adam Bell, who allowed just one hit in 5 1/3 innings. “We wanted this game.”

For the first 4 1/3 innings, the game was a pitchers' duel.

Mustangs junior left-hander Scott Beane retired 10 straight Camels before sophomore shortstop Corey James reached first on a throwing error in the fourth inning. And Bell allowed only one hit, Jon Lloyd's infield single to open the game.

With none out in the bottom of the fifth and Derek Downing on first base and Will Leslie on second for the Camels, senior right fielder Eric Clark bunted down the third-base line. Beane looked to third, then overthrew first as Downing scored.

One out later, pinch runner Adam Barnes and Clark scored on another error.

“We took advantage of a wet field,” Campbell County coach Geoff Bessecker said.

With one out in the sixth, Brossart put two on when Bell hit Nick Ziegler and Brandon Seiter. But senior Ryan Waters retired the final two and retired the side in the seventh.
