Girls district track championships

McNick, CCD take different roads to win

After the McNicholas girls 1,600-meter relay team was disqualified for a false start in the preliminaries, it appeared the Rockets' chances for a Division II team district title were in jeopardy.

But the Rockets, behind hurdler Kendra Hornschemeier, eked out a 91 1/2-89 victory over Indian Hill Saturday at Amelia Stadium.

Hornschemeier won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and Rockets coach Dan Rosenbaum said she was the team's catalyst.

“The best (female) athlete ever at McNicholas.” Rosenbaum called Hornschemeier.

In Division III, Katherine Hale won the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters as Cincinnati Country Day scored 174 points to beat Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy for its third consecutive district championship.

Rosenbaum was elated with the Rockets' performance.

“We knew we would be good, but we didn't know if we would be good enough to win today,” Rosenbaum said. “The disqualification of the four-by-four relay team made it tough.”

Hornschemeier, the point guard for the Rockets' Division II state championship basketball team, plans to go after another championship before graduating.

“My best chance for a state championship is in the 300 hurdles,” Hornschemeier said. “I'll never forget the thrill of winning in basketball.”

“We expected her to win both hurdles today and also run on the relay teams,” Rosenbaum said.

The Rockets' 400- and 800-meter relay teams both finished third. Amy Morsch was second in the 800 meters, and Angela Daniel was second in the 200 for McNick.

Reading sophomore Courtney Engel and Indian Hill senior Jacqui Copeland were double winners: Engel in the 800 and 1,600 meters; Copeland in the 200 and 400 meters. Each also qualified in two relays.

Purcell Marian's Carlina Flowers qualified for the regionals in four events: the 100 and 200 meters, long jump and 400-meter relay.

CCD coach Dave Walsh knows how his Indians keep winning district titles.

“The secret is our junior high program, coached by my assistant, Steve Conner,” he said. “The foundation is set, and we take it from there.”

The Indians placed fourth or better in every event but the 300 hurdles. They finished with a victory in the 1,600-meter relay.

“We win every year and came here expecting to again,” said freshman Keiana Mitchell, who won the 200 and also qualified in the 100 and the 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Senior Meridy Vollmer won the 100 hurdles and was fourth in the 400 for CCD, and sophomore Brooke Ivey won the 800.

CHCA senior Lauren Kirk was a double winner, winning the 100-meter dash and 300 hurdles.
