Walk-ins more than levy margin

Result likely to stand, officials say

By Sue Kiesewetter
Enquirer contributor

HAMILTON — Edgewood School officials do not think the outcome of Tuesday's election will change once 83 walk-in votes are counted later this month.

The district's 6.9-mill operating levy passed by just 58 votes, 2,454 to 2,396, after two previous failures in the past six months. That total doesn't include the walk-in votes, said Robert Mosketti, director of the Butler County Board of Elections.

The walk-in votes from voters in the Edgewood Schools were among 291 cast Tuesday throughout the county.

Under Ohio law the ballots cannot be counted until 11 days after the election but no later than 15 days, Mr. Mosketti said.

During that time the elections board must confirm that the walk-in voters are legally registered, have not voted elsewhere and have met other established criteria.

Ballots meeting the criteria will be counted and then added to the total on May 21, 22 or 23, Mr. Mosketti said.

“Historically, what we've found is it comes out the same,” Mr. Mosketti said. “Very seldom do we see a change.”

Edgewood Superintendent Dale Robertson said that almost all the walk-in votes cast would have to be negative to impact the outcome of the election.

“Statistically, it is unlikely the votes are skewed one way or the other,” Mr. Robertson said. “If just 16 of the walk-ins voted yes, we win.”

The elections board is also investigating four oral complaints from people who voted at the Wayne Township maintenance center.

Two of the four were initially given ballots that did not contain the Edgewood School issue, Mr. Mosketti said.

When they questioned it, they were directed to booths where ballots contained the issue. The other two com plained they were denied the right to vote.

Mr. Mosketti said the board is talking with poll workers about the situation before deciding whether a hearing on the matter is necessary.

Mr. Robertson said some voters who live in Preble County were directed to the wrong booths but the problem was corrected quickly.
