Drowned man's body recovered from river

NEWPORT — Boone County and Cincinnati water rescue units Friday night recovered the body of Michael P. Haney, 24, of Newport from the Licking River.

Mr. Haney was fishing with three other men Friday afternoon when he tried to swim across the river. Halfway there, he called for help. One of his fishing mates, whose name was not available, was able to reach Mr. Haney but was unable to bring him to shore, Newport Police Sgt. Jerry Roy said.

Mr. Haney went under and drowned, he said. Water rescue units were called about 6 p.m. They retrieved Mr. Haney's body about 11:15 p.m., Mr. Roy said.
