Witnesses agree with officer's shooting story

The Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio — Police said Thursday they have located four witnesses who support the account of a policeman who shot and killed an armed man.

Officer Mitchell Koogler fatally shot Cleophis Craver, 20, of Dayton, Monday night at the Summit Square Townhouse Apartments on the city's west side. Police said Officer Koogler had been responding to a disturbance in the parking lot, where several people were firing guns.

Officer Koogler told investigators he confronted Mr. Craver, who walked toward him, raised a handgun and pointed it at him.

The shooting created some tension but no disturbances in the largely black neighborhood, Lt. Col. Compston said. The officer is white, the dead man black.
