Duramed gets OK for generic drug
Duramed Pharmaceuticals Inc. has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to produce a generic version of the oral contraceptive Alesse, which had sales of $130 million in 2000.
Duramed's new Aviane oral contraceptive will join the Apri oral contraceptive and Cenestin conjugated estrogen drug in the Pleasant Ridge drug maker's stable of hormone products.
Duramed plans to begin shipping Aviane the only generic version of Alesse in early May.
Based on the track record of our other oral contraceptive, Apri, we look forward to the revenue contribution Aviane will make, Duramed chief executive officer E. Thomas Arington said.
