Cincinnati high school highlights
Berry leads Purcell over Elder
Vince Berry's single in the fifth inning drove in two runs, paving the way for Purcell Marian's 8-5 victory over Elder Thursday at Roselawn Field in the continuation of a suspended baseball game.
The loss dropped defending Greater Catholic League champion Elder one game behind St.Xavier in the South Division going into today's 4:30 p.m. showdown at St. Xavier.
If Elder wins, it wins a share of the GCL championship. A victory by St. Xavier gives the Bombers the outright league championship.
CCD 4, CHCA 3 Sophomore Asif Shah drove in Bret Smith for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Smith reached on a leadoff single and stole second and third to get in scoring position.
Fayetteville 8, Whiteoak 7 Sophomore Adam Burwinkel scored on a fielder's choice for the go-ahead run, and the Rockets clinched the Southern Hills League. They are ranked No.8 in the Division IV state poll, their first top-10 ranking.
Taylor 19, Indian Hill 0 The Yellowjackets clinched the Cincinnati Hills League title, their first league championship since winning the Metro Conference in 1988.
Junior Ryan Hoffman hit for the cycle and notched career highs with five hits and five RBI. Nick Katsetos also homered for Taylor.
Bethel-Tate 1, Felicity 0 Freshman Gabe Armandariz earned his first victory with a complete-game shutout and a career-high 11 strikeouts. D.J. Hannika drove in the lone run with a single to score Sean Waddle.
Loveland 10, Lebanon 2 Loveland took over sole possession of first place in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference Cardinal Division. Kevin Grubb and Nick Kowatsch each drove in two runs in a seven-run second inning. Grubb added a three-run homer in the fourth.
Fast-pitch softball
Northwest 3, Mason 1 (11 innings) Jenna Cella singled in Tracy Kump for the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th. C.J. Aichele added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to score Cella. Freshman Stephanie Vonderhaar went the distance to pick up her fifth victory.
CHCA 10, CCD 7 The Eagles scored nine runs with two outs in the first inning to take control.
Boys tennis
Sycamore's Marsh Kuresman defeated top-seeded Jon Khoury of Walnut Hills 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinals of Division I Flight A No.2 singles at the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association Classic.
No.2 seed Kevin Teufel of Princeton also fell in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Neil Sehgal of St. Xavier.
In Flight B singles, Andy Greer of Colerain upset second-seeded Phil Sparer of St.Xavier 6-4, 6-0.
