FLORENCE — Hope's triumph in the face of atrocity will be a theme of the annual Holocaust commemoration in Northern Kentucky this weekend.

        For seven years, a small group of Christians and Jews has organized the annual Yom HaShoa service, inviting well-known scholars and survivors to share the Holocaust's lessons.

        This year's service will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Florence Christian Church, 300 Main St. It is free and open to the public.

        “I hope people who attend will come away understanding more fully that it's the everyday choices each of us makes in our lives that make the difference between living with our neighbors in harmony or in strife,” said Judy Boyers Gee, a Covington lawyer who helps with the service each year.

        The service will feature candle-lighting, music by the Northern Kentucky Children's Ensemble Prep Choir and the chanting of the Kaddish Prayer by Cantor Sharon Kohn of Isaac Wise Temple in Cincinnati.

        Clark Williamson, a professor at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, will be the featured speaker.

        “Survivors of the Holocaust overwhelmingly give evidence that hope is undefeatable by reality,” he said.

        His speech also will address the Christian response to the Holocaust, which he has studied extensively.

        “Christian theology, among those Christians who have been responsive to the issues, has changed dramatically — from being a theology "against Jews' to being a theology "with and for Jews' and with and for all God's creation,” Dr. Williamson said.
