The Justin timeline
Some highlights in the adoption dispute between an Ohio family
and a Kentucky couple:
Feb. 28, 1997: Justin Moore born to Regina Moore and Jerry Dorning
of Covington, Ky.
Nov. 14, 1997: Ms. Moore asks Richard and Cheryl Asente of Girard,
Ohio to adopt Justin. The Asentes had adopted Justin's brother Joseph
Dec. 29, 1995.
Feb. 17, 1998: Ohio authorities approve interstate adoption of
Justin, and he moves to Girard with the Asentes.
March 26, 1998: Moore and Dorning advise their lawyer they do not
wish to proceed with the adoption.
July 6, 1998: Kentucky judge rules that Kentucky has jurisdiction
over Justin, despite Ohio's approval of the interstate adoption.
Feb. 4, 1999: Kentucky judge rules the Asentes must return custody
of Justin to his biological parents.
April 8, 1999: An Ohio probate judge rules that Ohio has
jurisdiction in the dispute.
Oct. 29, 1999: Ohio's 11th District Court of Appeals overturns
that ruling, saying Kentucky has jurisdiction.
April 19, 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court agrees to rule on the
state's role in the custody fight.
June 2, 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court agrees to let the case
proceed after the Asentes' lawyer missed a filing deadline two days
earlier by one minute. Court bars Attorney Charles Milless from
addressing the court in August.
Aug. 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court agrees to let a national
children's advocacy group address the court on behalf of the Asentes.
The OH Supreme Court refused to intervene in the case.
Sept. 2000: The Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled that Ms. Moore and
Mr. Dorning had read and understood the consent forms; therefore the
adoption was valid.
October 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court refused to reconsider
its decision to send a custody battle between an Ohio family and a
Florence couple back to Kentucky courts.
Dec. 2000: The biological parents of 3-year-old Justin Moore asked
the Kentucky Supreme Court to overturn the Kentucky Appellate ruling
that granted custody to the Asantes .
April 2001: Kentucky Supreme Court decides to hear the case of whether Ms. Moore and Mr. Dorning's consent to give Justin up for adoption is valid.
