A guide to help make your day

Going out

Earth Day: The Greater Cincinnati Earth Coalition clears the air with a day full of children's activities, gardening demonstrations and Environmental Awards at Sawyer Point. With music to add a touch of boogie fever: Homunculus, Ass Ponys and Cowboy Junkies play beginning 5:30 p.m. Noon-dark today, free. 863-5665.

Gospel Explosion: Lots of hand-clapping going on when Dr. Bobby Jonesof BET Television hosts two concerts with 15 local choirs. 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today, Albert B. Sabin Convention Center, downtown. $5 for 1 p.m. show, $15 for 7 p.m. show (clap loudly; the second one's a live recording session). 662-2664.

For kids: The acclaimed children's theater group Mixed Blood Theatre Co., fresh from Minneapolis, tackles timeless tales of Native American culture in According to Coyote. 10:30 a.m., 12:30 and 2 p.m. today, Playhouse in the Park's Rosenthal Plaza, Eden Park. $3-$4.50. 421-3888.

Classical: American Classical Music Hall of Fame celebrates the class of 2001 — including Dvorak, Crumb and Rachmaninoff — with an Induction Concert. CCM Philharmonia Orchestraperforms and, no doubt like always, shows it's Hall of Fame worthy too. 8 p.m. today, UC's Corbett Auditorium. Free. 556-4183.

Staying In

TV picks: Question: Will the public watch anything that has a $1 million payoff? Answer: Find out tonight when the XFL throws a championship game. Los Angeles and San Francisco collide, with players on the winning team dividing up $1 mil; since most of these guys make $40,000 a season, that's worth fighting for. XFL Football, 8 p.m., Channel 5.

Shades of Pink: Peter Sellers formed his delightful Inspector Clouseau character in the movie Pink Panther. Then he perfected it in this sequel. Like Pink, this has dandy direction by Blake Edwards and music by Henry Mancini; not to mention Mr. Sellers at his peak. A Shot in the Dark, 8:05, AMC.

Planning Ahead

24 hours out: Mixing styles helter skelter-like, (Hed) Pe, a punk-influenced hip-hop act out of California, hits town to crank up the decibels a couple million notches. 8 p.m. Sunday,Bogart's, 2621 Vine St., Corryville. $12-$14. 562-4949.

48 hours out: Theatre of the Mind, a little bit edgy and a whole lot daring, pops up with a reading of Pantomime, a comedy by Caribbean writer Derek Walcott. 7 p.m. Monday, Ensemble Theatre, 1127 Vine St., Over-the-Rhine. $5. 421-3555.

A week away: Sample the diversity of Pan-Asian culture in its many forms at Asian Culture Fest. Next Saturday and April 29, Cincinnati Museum Center. 287-7000.
