Campbell seniors' redone writing due today
By Lori Hayes
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ALEXANDRIA Today is the deadline for seniors at Campbell County High School to turn in their writing portfolios, which they've been scrambling to redo.
The portfolios are due to the school today, so they can get to the Kentucky Department of Education by Monday.
Several students finished early, beating the deadline by a few weeks, but some were still finishing this week.
The seniors were told in February they had to reproduce the portfolios because of teachers' editing marks, which violated state guidelines. Principal Stephen Sorrell seized the students' work, including draft material and computer disks. But students got back some of their work.
To ease the students' burden, school officials extended the portfolio deadline by two weeks and allowed students to do the work during class.
And, while the students were required to reproduce the work, the school council composed of the principal, teachers and parents waived its policy this year that includes the portfolios in students' final English grades.
The writing portfolios are part of the Kentucky Department of Education's testing system and will affect the school's assessment scores. Students work on the portfolios throughout high school, collecting three to five of their best writing pieces.
The state has detailed guidelines for what teachers can do to help students prepare portfolio work. The writing is supposed to be students' work. Teachers cannot make corrections or revisions.
State officials discovered the portfolio errors in January during a review of the high school prompted by low scores on last year's state tests.
Police continue to investigate vandalism at the school, discovered three days after the portfolios were confiscated. Vandals spray-painted portfolio and other remarks around the building. No arrests have been made.
