Cincinnati high school highlights

Wildcats pitcher can hit

Ryne McCormick's persistence paid off for the Finneytown Wildcats baseball team Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of New Miami at Finneytown.

McCormick, a sophomore pitcher, struck out 10 and drove in two runs, leading the Wildcats to a 7-4 victory over the Vikings in the nightcap after winning the first game 8-5.

“Ryne has bugged me all season to let him bat,” Finneytown coach Joe Nichols said. “We had a numbers problem today, so I let him bat.”

        • Glen Este 7, Western Brown 4 — Promoted to the varsity Friday, freshman Rocky Siegal drove in the winning run with a double in the sixth inning for the Trojans.

Cincinnati Country Day 7-4, Western Hills 1-3 — A single by Sam Bortz drove in Stephen Daily with the winning run in the second game, enabling the Indians to sweep the Mustangs.

Ross 11-9, Lemon Monroe 1-2 — James Sims went 4-for-6, including a home run in the first game, to lead the Rams to the sweep.

Northwest 17-11, Deer Park 3-10 — Senior shortstop Mike Koon went 7-for-8 with three doubles, a triple, five runs scored and eight RBI for the Knights.

Basketball

The Adidas Queen City Prophet Challenge will be at 7p.m. Saturday at Cincinnati State College.

Following an NCAA eligibility review session, an all-star game will be played between the top graduating seniors and a 17-year-old-and-under team.
