Tristate A.M. Report

Mother, 16, charged in death of newborn

WAVERLY, Ohio — A 16-year-old girl was charged Friday with putting her newborn baby in a trash bag and dumping it in a trash bin. The baby was declared dead a few hours later.

Christina McCoy was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with aggravated murder, involuntary manslaughter and endangering a child.

Pike County Prosecutor Robert Junk said the girl apparently concealed her pregnancy and delivered the baby girl at her home near Waverly on Wednesday.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the trash bin after 10 a.m. Wednesday by an ambulance crew. The baby, which appeared to be a few hours old, was later declared dead at Pike Community Hospital.

Ms. McCoy was being held in the juvenile detention center in Chillicothe. She is scheduled to appear in juvenile court on Monday.

Late last year, Gov. Bob Taft signed a bill allowing a parent to abandon an infant no older than 72 hours without fear of prosecution, provided the child is left with an emergency medical service worker, a police officer or a hospital employee. The parent can remain anonymous.

Waverly is about 85 miles east of Cincinnati.

The man displayed a weapon, the FBI said, but no one was injured. Police would not release the amount of money taken.
