Reds, MLB pondering schedule changes

By Mike Bass
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Major League Baseball has been monitoring the unrest in Cincinnati that has prompted an 8 p.m. curfew and could mean the Reds need to reschedule games next week.

The Reds have no home games until Tuesday and Wednesday, when the Milwaukee Brewers play two 7:05 p.m. games. MLB can wait as late as Monday to decide whether to postpone Tuesday's game at Cinergy Field or switch to an afternoon start, said Katy Feeney, MLB vice president for scheduling and club relations.

“We've been in touch with the Reds and will work with them, and they will be working with the city,” she said.

Feeney said a change could be decided by the end of the weekend, depending on discussions between the city and the Reds; she said MLB security also is in touch with Cincinnati police. The team would need time to get the word out to fans and stadium operations personnel in the event of a change.

The Reds and Brewers have some flexibility, because both teams are off Monday. The Brewers are scheduled to arrive in Cincinnati at 6p.m. Monday, traveling secretary Dan Larrea said.

“We would be certainly amenable to playing afternoon games if that's what Cincinnati and Major League Baseball decide is the best course of action,” Brewers general manager Dean Taylor said.

Reds chief operating officer John Allen will meet with city officials sometime between today and Monday, he said through Reds publicist Rob Butcher. Allen was unavail able for comment Friday.

Reds director of stadium operations Declan Mullin declined comment, referring an interview request to Allen.

“We have spoken to Major League Baseball,” Taylor said. “The Reds and Major League Baseball are keeping us abreast of the situation. We expect to receive continued updates within the next few days.”

After the Brewers leave, the Reds are off Thursday before facing the New York Mets on Friday night (7:05) and Saturday and Sunday afternoon (1:15 each). The Mets also are off Thursday.

The Reds won't play at home again until May 1, against the Dodgers.

Chris Haft and Tim Sullivan contributed to this report.
