Hamilton cop arrests 2 in holdup

Officer gave chase in field along railroad tracks

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — Quick response by a Hamilton police officer early Friday resulted in the arrests of two suspects in the robbery of a Second Street tavern — one of whom is accused of shooting at a witness as he fled.

Officer Michael Coleman, 30, pulled up in his cruiser just after a shot was fired along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Two suspects were attempting to flee in a field along railroad tracks after holding up the Depot Tavern about 1:45 a.m.

Officer Coleman, a seven-year member of he department, gave chase, pulled his weapon and ordered the suspects to the ground. They obeyed, said Hamilton Public Affairs Officer Dave Crawford.

Police said David Bunger, 21, of Pater Avenue, Hamilton, fired one shot from a derringer at Enrique Reyes-Castillo, 32, of Hamilton, who took off in pursuit of two suspects as he saw them run out of the tavern.

Officer Crawford said Mr. Reyes-Castillo had chased Mr. Bunger and Louis Sen ger Jr., 18, of Gordon Smith Boulevard, Hamilton, along railroad tracks two blocks from the tavern when Mr. Bunger fired at him and missed.

Officer Coleman's supervisor, Lt. Michael Martinsen, commended him “for his exceptional performance under the most difficult of circumstances — a dark and isolated field along railroad tracks.” Money taken in the robbery was recovered.

Officer Crawford said the suspects entered the bar and Mr. Bunger pulled the gun and demanded money from bartender Linda Sheehan, 52, who gave him $329 in cash. Another $50 was taken from a tavern patron.

Mr. Bunger was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, felonious assault and two counts of theft. Mr. Senger was charged with two counts of complicity to aggravated robbery and two counts of complicity to theft. Both were being held in the Butler County Jail on Friday awaiting arraignment Monday in Hamilton Municipal Court.
