A guide to help make your day

Going out

Sesame Street Live: Well, here's a campground you don't see every day. It's a musical job and all full of folk like Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster and that whole Sesame Street crowd. “Big Bird's Sunny Day Camp Out” opens 8 p.m. today, Firstar Center. $10 today, $11-$15 Friday-Sunday. 562-4949.

Jim Hall: One of jazz's favorite guitarists brings his trio to pluck a tune or two or 20 on the Miami University-Hamilton Artist Series. 7:30 p.m. today, Parrish Auditorium, 1601 Peck Blvd. $10-$15. (513) 529-3200.

Theater: The pretty, perky, sometimes vicious and and always ritualized world of beauty pageants gets the musical-comedy send-up when Ensemble Theatre's Off-Center/On-Stage series takes a lunge at Miss Something. 8 p.m. today, ETC, 1127 Vine St., Over-the-Rhine. $10. 421-3555.

        Tony Furtado: This is not your father's bluegrass — it's neo-bluegrass, sometimes called newgrass, from a top-notch slide-guitar/banjo player. BarrelHouse Brewing Company, 10 p.m. today, 22 E. 12th St., Over-the-Rhine. $6. 421-2337.

Staying In

TV picks: Roll out the VCRs for this great rerun: An ER in which Doug Ross (George Clooney) rescues a boy from a culvert during a fierce rainstorm. It's an exciting hour, superbly filmed. 10 p.m., Channels 5, 22.

Getting closer: It's not exactly down to the wire yet, but it's getting closer each week. We have seven people left, including Crittenden, Ky.'s Rodger Bingham. Survivor: The Australian Outback, 8 p.m. Channels 12, 7.

The Goods (What's in stores today)

Hard-core sci-fi fans revere the name of Philip K. Dick, late author of the stories that inspired Blade Runner and Total Recall, among others. An acclaimed but rarely seen documentary about the strange, even surreal, life of the visionary writer is out on DVD, complete with bonus footage and behind-the-scenes info. The Gospel According to Philip K. Dick by Mark Steensland and Andy Massagli is from First Run Features, www.firstrunfeatures.com, (800) 229-8575.

Planning Ahead

24 hours out: Children's Theatre hits the fable circuit with the adapted Greek drama Androcles & the Lion — all about a lion with a thorn in his paw and a really good memory. 7:30 p.m. Friday, Taft Theatre, Fifth and Sycamore Streets, downtown. $5-$14. 562-4949.

48 hours out: Dayton Art Institute brings a touch of France to the Midwest with the blockbuster show The Triumph of French Painting — more than 60 works by Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin and more. Through June 3. $8-$10. (937) 223-4278.

72 hours 'til Sunday: The ever so venerable Xavier University Piano and Guitar Series spends an afternoon with jazz pianist James Williams. 2:30 p.m., Cincinnati Art Museum theater, Eden Park. $14. 745-3161.

Get To It appears daily. Send items to Get To It, Tempo, Cincinnati Enquirer, 312 Elm St., Cincinnati 45202; fax: 768-8330.
