UK, Smith near contract extension
The Associated Press
COLUMBIA, S.C. Kentucky coach Tubby Smith reportedly is not interested in South Carolina's coaching job and is on the verge of restructuring his deal with the Wildcats.
The Kentucky Athletic Association Board of Directors is scheduled to meet Wednesday to ratify a contract extension for Smith, who has been an object of USC's search since Eddie Fogler stepped down as coach March 12. The new deal will give him a raise from the $1.25 million he made last season, according to spokesman Brooks Downing.
Smith and Kentucky athletics director Larry Ivy met twice last week to negotiate the extension. We'll be making some kind of statement here pretty soon, Smith told the Lexington Herald-Leader Monday night.
USC athletics director Mike McGee requested permission to speak to Smith last Tuesday. McGee had put together a package for Smith believed to be worth $1.5 million to $1.8 million if he had taken the USC job.
