Krupp Hoesch Suspensions to close Hamilton plant

By Earnest Winston
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — Krupp Hoesch Suspensions, which builds suspension coils for automobiles, announced Wednesday it will close its plant on Berk Boulevard, leaving more than half its 106 employees without jobs by May 31.

Human Resources Manager Pam Esterkamp said employees were given the news during a company meeting Wednesday.

“The decision came from our corporate office in Germany,” Ms. Esterkamp said. “We've just had some bumps in our road over the last couple of years that have resulted in lower output for this plant.”

Krupp Hoesch Suspensions has done business in Hamilton for about 10 years. About 60 employees will lose their jobs by May 31.

“However, we will be offering positions at our sister company to some of those employees,” Ms. Esterkamp said. “Other employees will remain in our employment for a longer period of time just to close down operations. ... Some of the employees will be going to Mexico to help with a start-up operation there.

“We are trying to do all we can for the people who are currently employed with us to find them other positions and to assist them in finding positions.”

The sister company, Krupp Bilstein, which manufactures automobile shock absorbers, is also located on Berk Boulevard. It will move into the Krupp Hoesch Suspensions building and expand. ThyssenKrupp, the parent company, is based in Germany.

Councilman Richard Holzberger said, “Every time we think we have the budget balanced, then something else hits us.”

Mercy Hospital Hamilton announced last week it will close by June, displacing 630 employees and costing the city more than $400,000 in income-tax revenues.

Hundreds of Hamilton jobs were cut recently by Ohio Casualty Group and International Paper.
