        LEXINGTON, Ky. — Bishop Brossart's Katie Schwegmann and Jackson County's Tiffany Roaden top the list of players named Monday to the 2001 Associated Press all-state girls basketball teams.

        Schwegmann, the state's leading scorer, nabbed first team honors for the third year in a row while Roaden, one of the leaders of Jackson County's 33-1 squad, was the top vote-getter in ballots cast by the state's sports writers and broadcasters.

        Schwegmann averaged 26 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.4 steals and 3.4 assists for the Lady Mustangs (28-6), advancing them to their first Sweet Sixteen this season. Her 831 points broke her own single-season school record and gave her 2,868 for her career.

        Bishop Brossart coach Ray Kues said Schwegmann, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, has accomplished everything a high school athlete possibly could during a four-year career.

        “She has a passion for the game like no player I've ever coached,” said Kues, who added that Schwegmann is looking to continue her career at Pittsburgh, Kent State, Miami, Valparaiso or Northern Kentucky. “There's nothing she'd rather do than play basketball, whether it's in her own backyard or in front of a huge crowd for a state championship.”

        Joining Schwegmann and Roaden on the first team are Shelby Valley's Summer Jones, Sheldon Clark's Mandy Harmon and West Carter's Megen Gearhart.

        Jackson County coach Greg Parrett, whose once-beaten team will face Presentation in the first round of the girls state tournament on Thursday, was selected coach of the year.
