Beavercreek finishes with perfect season

Beats Chaminade-Julienne for Division I title

By Andy Resnik
Associated Press Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Beavercreek coach Ed Zink said he wasn't worried that Dayton Chaminade-Julienne wouldn't allow Alison Bales to catch the ball inside. At least not when Emily Williams and the rest of the Battling Beavers were raining 3s.

The unbeaten and top-ranked Battling Beavers and Dayton Chaminade-Julienne both tied the state record for 3-pointers in a Division I title game by making eight from beyond the arc.

But Bales, a 6-foot-5 center, made the difference at the end, blocking two shots in the final minute to help Beavercreek (28-0) earn a 42-35 victory and the school's first state title since 1995.

She finished with just six points, but it didn't matter. Williams scored 14 — 12 on 3-pointers.

“The way they were playing defense, they basically took her away from us,” Zink said of Bales. “So we shot the 3.”

And shot, and shot, and shot.

Beavercreek was just 11-of-31 from the floor, but hit 8-of-17 3-pointers. Chaminade-Julienne shot 13-of-30, going 8-for-20 on 3s. The team's 16 combined 3-pointers set a championship game record for most 3s made by both teams.

“I thought eight 3s would be enough to win the game,” said Chaminade-Julienne coach Frank Goldsberry.

Turns out eight 3s were enough, for Beavercreek.

“We don't score a whole lot inside anyway,” Goldsberry said.

The strategy for Chaminade-Julienne (25-3) was obvious. The Lady Eagles were chucking 3s from the outset, afraid to challenge Bales inside.

Chaminade-Julienne continually passed the ball around the perimeter, sometimes holding the ball as much as 45 seconds before even looking to shoot.

Each time the Lady Eagles attempted to get into the lane, Bales was there, using her height, long wing span and agility to change shots she couldn't block.

“You get that tree in there, she's tough,” Goldsberry said. “She's all over the place in there.”

Bales committed only one foul, with 4:13 to in the third quarter. She made her first big play on defense with a minute remaining, blocking a shot by Megan Duffy that would have cut Beavercreek's lead to five.

With Beavercreek ahead 38-33 seconds later, Bales came up big again, blocking a shot by Jenny Beane.

“They took her out of our offense, but defensively she made big blocks late when in the game when they're trying to score quickly,” Zink said. “She doesn't need the ball to be an impact player.”

Tiffany Webb helped finish off the Lady Eagles, making two free throws and scoring on a layup to put Beavercreek ahead 42-32 with 20 seconds to play.

Bales had 13 rebounds and Williams made 4-of-5 3-pointers for Beavercreek. Webb had nine points and Heather Kaiser had eight, shooting 2-for-7 on 3s.

Duffy, a junior who already has committed to play for Notre Dame, led Chaminade-Julienne with 15 points, making 3-of-11 3s. Brandie Hoskins scored 11 and made 3-of-4 3s, but she missed several easy shots around the basket after making nice moves to get by Bales.

Chaminade-Julienne lost in a championship game for the second time in four seasons. The Lady Eagles were runner-up in 1998 Division I and won the Division II state title in 1999.

The teams met once before this season, with Beavercreek winning 47-31. Chaminade-Julienne's only other loss this season came against Osseo, a high school in Minnesota.

The previous record for 3-pointers in Division I title game by both teams was 11, set in 1998 (Pickerington, Chaminade-Julienne) and 1997 (Mason, Wadsworth).

Pickerington in 1998 was the only other school to make eight 3-pointers in a Division I title game.
