March Madness heats up


Conference tourneys this week

        The Xavier and University of Cincinnati women play in their conference tournament championship games tonight, while the Miami men's team plays a first-round tournament game at Millett Hall. The other area men's teams — UC, Xavier and Kentucky — earned first-round byes and open tourney play later this week.

        Miami hosts Akron at 7 p.m. today at Millett Hall in the Mid-American Conference.

        Top-seeded UC plays its first Conference USA game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Louisville. UC meets the winner of Wednesday's UAB-Louisville game.

        Xavier, which earned a bye as the second seed in the Atlantic 10 tourney, plays at 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Philadelphia. The Musketeers will meet the winner of Wednesday's George Washington-Duquesne matchup.

        Kentucky, the top seed in the SEC East, plays at 3:15 p.m. Friday in Nashville against the winner of Thursday's South Carolina-Mississippi State game.

        The Xavier women play George Washinton today at 5 p.m. at Philadelphia, while the UC women meet Tulane at 8 p.m. ET at Milwaukee.

        The Northern Kentucky University men's and women's teams begin play this week in the NCAA Division II basketball tournament Sunday.

        The NKU women (25-4) are the defending national champions and will play Gannon (Pa.) (22-7) at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Houghton, Mich.

        The NKU men (25-6) will face Grand Valley State (21-8) at 9:15 p.m. Thursday at Owensboro, Ky.
