Chef joins the club

        Sean Kagy has left the Palace Restaurant at the Cincinnatian. Wednesday was his last day as executive chef of the downtown hotel. This week he begins a new job as executive chef at Tournament Players Club, a new golf and country club opening this spring near Kings Island. It's a private club that will host PGA events.

        Mr. Kagy is the second Tristate restaurant chef to make the jump to a country club this year. Andrew Gabriele left Nicholson's for a job at the Royal Oak Country Club last month.

        These are just two more indications that golf might be taking over the world. But it's an understandable move for a chef: Club jobs often are more predictable, they offer good benefits and, sometimes, give opportunities for travel and continuing education.

        While it's a loss to the restaurant-going public, Mr. Kagy, who recently became a father, says he looks forward to doing something new.

        At the Palace, a national search has begun for Mr. Kagy's replacement. Marketing director Renee Koerner says hotel executives plan to take their time and find someone exciting.


        Floyd's is back: Floyd's, the tiny Mideastern restaurant on Calhoun Street in Clifton Heights, has reopened. It has moved next door into more conveniently designed digs, though there still are only a handful of seats.

        Owner Emil Salti says in good weather, there will be tables outside on a new patio.

        New hours: 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. 127 Calhoun St., Clifton Heights, 221-2434.


        New theme: Champs, the restaurant in the Hyatt Regency, downtown, is closed temporarily for renovations. In the process, it will be changed from an Italian restaurant to a more casual sports-themed spot, like the adjacent Champs Lounge. The restaurant should reopen by March 25.

Wine dinners

        Festival events: The Cincinnati International Wine Festival begins Thursday with dinners at Greater Cincinnati restaurants. Winemakers will attend, and menus will be devised to complement their wines.

        New participants this year will be the Celestial, Jeff Ruby's and L'Auberge in Dayton. Also: Daveed's, Iron House Inn, Montgomery Inn Boathouse, Maisonette, Morton's, Palm Court, Sturkey's and the Palace.

        Spanish flavor: Here's a different kind of wine dinner at the Phoenix, downtown: a three-course meal and wines of Spain, served Wednesday and Thursday. . The menu will be preset, but not the time. Make reservations as usual.

        There will be no formal program or featured speaker. But information will be presented informally, along with a red, white and sparkling wine from Spain.

        Cost: $45 per person, not including tip. Reservations: 721-8901.
