No.3 Mercy scored 15 unanswered points in a three-minute span in the fourth quarter to clinch its first Division I district title since 1996.

The Bobcats, who won eight straight titles prior 1996, will face Mason at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at Wright State.

“We're a team capable of scoring 15 straight, but I wondered, "Where did this run come from?'” Mercy coach Mary Jo Huismann said. “We hit three 3-pointers in the stretch and those are always killers.”

Mercy trailed 41-40 when Angie Heintz made a 15-footer to give the Bobcats the lead and start the run. Becky Rutherford added a layup and Erin Mullen hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to six.

Jen Winright then broke open the game with two 3-pointers and an assist. Winright's second 3-pointer came with 2:22 remaining and gave Mercy a 55-41 lead and command of the game.

“As point guard, I had to step up and quarterback the team,” Winright said. “We hit the three 3-pointers and that pumped us up.”

Melissa Clavier and Siobhan Zerilla, Mercy's leading players, each fell victim to foul trouble in the first half, but the Bobcats got 10 points from reserve Jen Wolf.

“I was please with our defensive effort, except we fouled too much,” said Huismann. “I was also pleased with the play from our bench. Normally we don't have to play them as much.”
