Fast start launches Rockets to regional

The first appearance by the McNicholas girls basketball team in the Division II district championship game was a success.

A 14-0 run early in the first quarter helped the Rockets, ranked third in the Enquirer's regular-season poll, to a 54-39 victory over Roger Bacon Saturday at Mason High School.

McNicholas advances to the Division II regional semifinals Tuesday against Trotwood-Madison at Vandalia Butler High School.

“Everyone talks about the boys team, but we'd also like to do get some recognition,” said senior Kendra Hornschemeier, who scored a game-high 14 points for the Rockets. “This has been our goal from the start.”

After Roger Bacon opened the game with a field goal, Hornschemeier and sophomore Kim Breving took over, combining for 16 of the next 18 points.

“We had 14 turnovers in the first half and they got easy baskets off of them,” Roger Bacon coach Tom Sunderman said. “The seniors may have had jitters because they were afraid this may be their last game.”

McNicholas easily beat Roger Bacon twice during the regular season.

“I thought we played well the first half, but we didn't handle prosperity well,” McNicholas coach Rob Heise said. “After we took the big lead, we got careless with the ball during the second half.”

The Rockets took a 43-21 lead into the fourth quarter before the Spartans went on an 8-0 run. McNicholas regrouped and took control the rest of the way.
